WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF 30 AUGUST VICTORY DAY?
The Great Offensive, which started on August 26, 1922 and continued for five days and nights until August 30, 1922, resulted in the decisive victory of the Turkish army. The planning of the attack was made with great secrecy and meticulousness. No one was aware of the time of the offensive except Gazi Mustafa Kemal Pasha and one or two of his close colleagues.
Before the Great Offensive, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Pasha was given the title of Commander-in-Chief from the Turkish Grand National Assembly for the fourth time. The Great Offensive, which ended with the decisive victory of the Turkish army on 30 August, was greeted with great joy both in the Turkish Grand National Assembly, in the press and among the public, and telegrams of congratulations were sent to the army and the Commander-in-Chief of the army for their success.
Two years after the victory, on 30 August 1924, both the victory was celebrated and the martyrs were commemorated with a ceremony attended by the Commander-in-Chief of the Great Victory, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Pasha, in Dumlupınar.
Two years after this ceremony, a law was enacted in the Turkish Grand National Assembly and it was determined that August 30 was the army’s holiday.
