US tests autonomous cleaning vehicles

A self-driving street sweeper produced by a Finnish company has started work. The autonomous vehicle will operate in the US Ports of New York and New Jersey for two weeks.

Port officials said the autonomous vehicle would reduce costs. Each street sweeper is worth $450,000 and can carry around 1,500 kilos of wet and dry garbage.

The robot vehicle travels at a speed of 4 kilometers per hour and can pass around obstacles with the lidar sensors it uses.

Port authorities are testing whether autonomous sweepers will be safe to use in closed and controlled industrial areas such as ports.
