Stating that Alzheimer’s disease is a disorder evaluated in the category of dementia, Assoc. Dr. Refik Kunt said, “This disorder occurs due to the death of these cells due to the formation of beta amyloid plaques around the cells in the brain over time. Alzheimer’s disease is a disease that usually occurs over the age of 65. As the life expectancy increases, the risk of Alzheimer’s also increases.
Noting that Alzheimer’s complaints can also manifest in the early stages and the symptoms increase as age progresses, and the person can become unable to maintain mutual dialogues, Kunt said, “In very advanced cases, it becomes impossible to complete daily tasks and special care is required. Essential in the treatment of Alzheimer’s; to slow the progression of the disease by reducing symptoms. For this reason, it is recommended that people with a family history of Alzheimer’s should keep their memory strong.”
Defining Alzheimer’s disease as “a neurological disorder that causes weakening in memory power, thought and behavioral functions”, Kunt said, “Dementia is considered one of the types of dementia. With age, weakening of mental activity and forgetfulness are considered normal. This condition is not always considered as Alzheimer’s. However, Alzheimer’s is considered in the category of dementia. In other words, there is a fine line between age-related forgetfulness and Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive disease. After symptoms appear, the person may soon be unable to carry out their daily activities. As Alzheimer’s progresses, social skills weaken and the logical coherence of thoughts is lost. It is a disorder that is mostly seen in people aged 65 and over. However, although the symptoms are mild, they can also be seen in the early stages. For this reason, we cannot directly characterize Alzheimer’s as a disease of old age.
“Common Alzheimer’s Symptoms”
Noting that having difficulty remembering people, objects, addresses, numbers, dates, forgetting the order of the days and months, getting lost even in well-known places and addresses are symptoms of Alzheimer’s, Assoc. Dr. Refik Kunt said, “Both the causes and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease have been investigated for many years. As a result of the researches, although we still cannot talk about a definite and single cause, it is thought that genetic factors and lifestyle are effective in the formation of the disease, “he added that sleep disorder, inadequate and unhealthy diet and sedentary life also pose a risk for Alzheimer’s disease, especially for smokers.
