Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of Mexican drug lord Joaquin Guzman, nicknamed El Chapo, was transferred from the federal prison where he was detained in the USA to an open prison.
US Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) Spokesperson Donald Murphy said in a statement that Aispuro was transferred to an open prison in Los Angeles on May 30 to serve his remaining sentence in the US state of Texas as part of his reintegration process.
In the news in the US press, it was pointed out that Aispuro has the right to benefit from the social reintegration process in the last period of his sentence, according to the law, and it was stated that his sentence will end on September 13 and he is expected to be released completely.
In the open prison where Aispuro is located, they will have the right to work, learn a profession, receive psychological support and use their social media accounts.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Aispuro, a 31-year-old former beauty queen with dual U.S.-Mexican dual citizenship, pleaded guilty to the charges against her in the case before the District Court of Columbia in June 2021, following her arrest.
The judge said they had evidence that Aispuro had aided in drug trafficking and mediated between her husband and other partners of the cartel while her husband was in prison. At the hearing in November 2021, a 4-year prison sentence was requested for Aispuro. On the other hand, the former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, Guzman, is being held in Supermax prison in Colorado, USA to serve a life sentence.
