200-year-old tree, symbol of Sierra Leone, fell in storm
















The Kapok Tree, which has become the symbol of ‘freedom’ in Sierra Leone, fell yesterday due to the storm and heavy rain. Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio came to the scene and made the following statement;

“Today I visited the site in central Freetown that has been home to our historic Kapok Tree for over 2 centuries. It was a surreal sight to watch as it passed by the Great Fallen Kapok Tree. The Kapok Tree is ingrained into Freetown’s rich cultural heritage.

In order to pass on this heritage to future generations, the remains of the fallen Kapok Tree will be taken to the National Museum by the Monument and Trust Commission. The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs will lead the conservation efforts to remind us of our common heritage and history.”
